Empty Shops is a witnessing of global change that has altered streetscapes and community structures. As retail globalization replaces small businesses, shopping strips that were once distinct and synonymous with their location have become common, standardized and replicable. The aftermath lines the streets of suburban and inner-city districts with empty frontages, abandoned by their former owners. Portrayed exactly as they were found, in different stages of dissolution, they are isolated and promoted, tracing the shop’s particular story and the former owners’ lot.
